`stuck-in-suburbia
NOTE: This interview was taken place live in a chat room.
First of all, thank you for staying up so late for this interview. So, can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is Heather. I'm 20 years old and I'm a third year university student.
Really, what are you studying at uni?
I'm a biology major, though I'm working on switching that. My main objective right now is to go into education.
Interesting. I plan on going into education too.
I got into dA cause I was taking this art course my first year. Two guys in my class were looking up refs for their scultpures and were on dA. I was intrigued, and remembered that my friend ~Jerekh had an account. So I joined up. I mostly uploaded a couple sketches I had done and just kind of existed for a while before the community got a hold of me. It's addictive.
Your username intrigues me. How did you come up with it?
Oh that. It came from another website. Before, I never had a constant username, and at the time would scramble for anything that I could remember and that wasn't taken. I was listening to a Green Day song and tried different variations of it. And that's how I came up with it.
So before you said "It's addictive". But what do you like most about deviantART?
I think that the thing I like most about dA is the community and how diverse it is. You can find someone who likes anything, no matter how obscure. And the people are (usually) fantastic, and challenge you to become a better artist, and help you grow.
How about the features, are there any that you haven't used before?
There are a few I don't use. But that's cause dA has such a range of features. I've never touched portfolios, I'm in the forums rarely, and never comment in them. I don't use muro cause it doesn't work very well with a trackpad. There's something I know I'm forgetting...
I do try to branch out, though. On rare occasions.
Generic art interview question: How old were you when you first became interested in art?
Oh jeez. I've always liked to doodle a little. When I was younger my grandma would buy me these "learn to draw..." books. In high school, I wouldn't go anywhere without a little sketchpad in my coat pocket. Digital art is definitely new, though.
Now while we're on the topic of art, which artists (off and on dA) inspire you?
Crap, I was expecting this question and I'm still not prepared. It's not really specific artists that inspire me. It's more of situations, or conversations with people. Now, there are some people who I look at and I'm floored by how talented they are and how much they undervalue themselves. And there are times when comparing yourself to someone better provides a bit of a goal or objective, a measure of your skill level, where you would like it to be, and how many times you have to level up to reach that goal.
Competition is fun. Especially when you're the only one who knows about the contest.
From the nice to the naughty; what are your pet peeves on dA?
Oh these. It ranges from day to day, but there are things that always piss me off. People who honestly don't care what gallery they submit to and won't move deviations when asked politely. People who use l33t5p34k and txttalk to the point that I cannot understand them. Sometimes, it's hard to tell that it's even english. Oh, and then there's people who bitch and moan just to hear themselves talk but have no idea what they are talking about.
I know what you mean.
Well, I just got seniority, so there's not much else I could really get, you know? I would love to get into a volunteer position, if school and stuff allowed, because I think it would be a great experience, and a fantastic way to give back.
Let's move on to a controversial topic, what do you think about Deviant Stamps getting DDs?
I don't think it should be any different than anything else getting a DD. Sometimes the ones picked aren't of the highest calibur, but truly beautiful ones do exist. Stamps that are executed so perfectly, I couldn't think of anything I would change if my skill was limitless. And I think that saying that one deviation over another is not allowed to get a 24 hour feature (not award!), I think it's very unfair.
What type of music are you into?
I listen to a huge range of stuff. On a given day I can go from indulging in 90s pop music to some of the indie bands I really enjoy. The things that are very set that I enjoy are some classic rock, indie, some of that top 40 stuff (not Bieber, never Bieber). My favourite band of all time, though, is blink-182.
And movies, which are your favourites?
My favourites are the Princess Bride, Watchmen, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Slong Blog, um... nothing else springs to mind. I'm usually more partial to comedies and I will not watch horror movies.
This brings us to the end of the interview, is there anything else you would like to add?
That's all of it? Alright, usually people put something really profound here. Something epic and earth shattering. Life changing. I'm not going to do that. I leave you with: Kumquat.
I'd like to say a huge thanks to `stuck-in-suburbia for taking the time to be interviewed. And congratulate her for recently gaining senior status!

Well, I am an Australian deviant who's been around the site for a few years now, but this is my first active account, you know posting art and spreading rainbows and such, before I was just an art appreciator really
