Can you tell us a little about yourself?
My name is b0r3d13. I am a male human living in the north San Fransisco Bay area. There are many who claim I could be gay and am a terriable speeler. As far as I'm concerned, I'm straight, and my spelling could possiably use a little work.
`BrokenTutorials, how did you find deviantART?
I used to hang out on MySpace a lot in a few groups. In one of the group forums I hung out on, people would often post links to their deviantART work and such, and I poked around. One day, while chatting it up with a MySpace friend on YIM, ~Homiko, i showed her a crappy little photomanip I had made. She asked me if I was member of dA, I said no. She then told me that if I joined and posted said crappy photomanip, people might leave friendly comments and offer come advice to make it less crappy. Of course I have longs since learned that advice was terribly misguided because no deviantART user leaves seriously useful advice in their comments, though I do still appreciate the thought. Also, don't bother looking for that first crappy manip. I deleted it from my gallery two years ago after realizing that it violated copyright laws, since I had used Google Images to get the photos.
How did you get your username, or what does it symbolize?
I hate to disappoint you, but my username has no meaning behind it whatsoever. That fact saddens me as well. In my defense, I was 18 when I made the account and didn't know any better. If you want a really sort of "origin story" well, I must warn you, the origin is as unoriginal as it gets.
You see, back in the day, as was previously mentioned, I used to hang out on MySpace quite a bit. Some might say I was addicted. My display name on MySpace was "Bored". I made that account when I was 15, and MySpace was like... shit, 2 years old? I think? This was before Facebook had taken over the world. Scary, I know. But as a 15 year old kid, I wasn't incredibly creative, and as you may guess, I was rather bored. So, I named myself "bored." I guess when I had finally got around to joining dA, I hadn't really outgrown that part. The name "bored" was, naturally, already taken, given how unoriginal it was, so I did the next logical thing and used the 1337 spelling... which was also taken. So I tacked on one of my favorite numbers, "13" to the end, and thus the account that is `BrokenTutorials was born. As for the story behind the symbol? The best answer I got for that one is... shit happens.
What do you like most about deviantART?
I think I like my friends here the most. Yes, the art is awesome, and community, though fickle and moody like a pretty woman in her period, is also pretty cool, but my friends are really the only reason I stick around here. They're good people. You should get to know them. I swear they don't bite, sometimes. Oh and I enjoy posting stuff and hearing what people have to say. Yes, there is that as well.
Are there any deviantART features that you have never used?
The Shout box and the Discover thingy. Still have not touched either of them, I don't intend to.
How old were you when you first became interested in art?
Oh fuck, that's a tough question. I was drawing scribbles by age 2, like any normal kid living in a middle class household. At age 3 I found that crayons are delicious, and by age 4, discovered they make excellent artwork as well. I believe I continued to draw and doodle my way through school, pretty much all the way up to college. The last few semesters I've even taken a few drawing classes, they've helped immensely, and I'd highly recommended such classes to any struggling artist that can afford it.
Which artists (off and on dA) inspire you?
Ah crap... I have to list names? I hate to implicate people, but if I must.`shelldevil and `UnicornReality helped inspire me through their incredible awesome and love for resources, to create my own resources.
A friend from MySpace inspired me to take on Apophysis and explore fractals. I don't recall his deviantART name at this time, my apologies.
After viewing Vexel Tutorial-Hair by ^VAngelLJ, I just had to try vexels and vectors out for myself, and I've loved em ever since. I even learned a little bit of Adobe Illustrator so I could try my hand at Gradient Meshes because of that.
As for off deviantART? To be perfectly honest, I don't really look at artwork outside of dA that often. So I can't honeslty say if there's any other artists that inspire me.
What are your pet peeves on dA?
I have a list a million miles long. The entire site is a fucking pet peeve. Well maybe that's an exageration. My biggest peeves are as follows:AlTeRnAtiNg CaPs in titles. FOR FUCK'S SAKE, HOW DO YOU FUCKING TYPE LIKE THAT? JEEEEEBUS.
Text Speak. Anybody who knows me know that I hate that shit like the fucking plague. IT'S CALLED AN EDUCATION. LEARN TO USE IT.
People who don't follow Group submission and joining rules. I am an admin in several groups. I love all the groups I'm an admin in dearly, but for fuck's sake, if you're going to join a group FUCKING READ THE FUCKING RULES BEFORE YOU FUCKING SEND IN A FUCKING REQUEST, YOU FUCKING RETARD. I'm looking at you, people I denied.
People who violate ToA through stuff like copyright inftingment. GOOGLE IMAGES IS NOT YOUR BITCH. YOU MAY NOT USE THOSE IMAGES FOR YOUR OWN MEANS. IT'S CALLED THE STOCK GALLERY. USE IT. THEY'RE FRIENDLY PEOPLE. JUST DON'T PISS THEM OFF, OR A THOUSAND ANGRY FEMALES AND 5 MALES WILL DEVOUR YOUR SOUL. Ahem, yes. the stock gallery is my bitch and it loves me. All of you would do well to befriend a stock artist or two. Just saying.
Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about buying pageviews with points. What is your view on this?
Fucking bullshit. For lack of a better word, it's stupid. That's worse then paying people for llamas. If you're that desperate for pageviews, gather a gaggle for friends, get them all on Internet Explorer, and have them refresh your page a million times over. Boom, instant pageviews. Please note this trick will not work for FireFox, because FireFox is above such trivial things.
What type of music are you into?
Oh I listen to many types of music. According to iTunes, I listen to 85 genres, 166 artists, and 287 albums. iTunes lies though, since I only actually listen to less then a quarter of my music at any given times, most of those genres are really mixed genres, same with the artists. If you want a more better estmiate, I listen to mostly rock and rap. Lots of Linkin Park, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, MC Frontalot, Lupe Fiasco, Lily Allen... oh the list goes on.
What kind of movies are you into?
I mostly enjoy those of the action/adventure genre. I also enjoy a good comedy ever now and then. I'm not really a fan of horror, drama and moves of the like. Just not my style.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
Whoever nominated me is obviously an ugly woman on crack. I LOVE YOU, UGLY CRACK WHORE. PLEASE COME VISIT ME SOMETIME. I WILL SHOW YOU MY POKEMONS.
Id like to say a huge thanks to `BrokenTutorials for taking the time to be interviewed.
