Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I live in Wisconsin with two dogs, a cat, and a man. I work in a portrait studio as a photographer, and a lot of my downtime is spent at deviantART.
`FantasyStock, how did you find deviantART?
I used to work at a different online community, which eventually disbanded. It was a nice, little site where I wrote articles about television shows and upcoming cable and internet entertainment trends. When that community closed, I was kind of lost. I searched for other communities where I could contribute, but I had a difficult time finding a site that felt right to me. I met an artist at one of those sites who introduced me to dA. I didn't know anyone other than him here, and he disappeared soon after that. I began exploring deviantART without friends, without knowing what I was doing, like starting over completely.
How did you get your username, or what does it symbolize?
I'm a fan of fantasy art, and thought I'd upload some photos that could perhaps be used in those kinds of works. So I decided to call my stock account "FantasyStock." Since then, my selection isn't just for fantasy stuff anymore... But that's how it started. I abandoned my other account almost immediately after starting what is now my main username, `FantasyStock.
What do you like most about deviantART?
It's so greeeen!Actually, it's the people. I was surprised to find so many nice and helpful people at a place where everyone is a "deviant." I came here kind of expecting people to be more rude or mean, but that's actually kind of rare from my experience at dA.
As a GM, what do you look for in deviations when you are giving DDs?
The Resources & Stock Images gallery isn't like most galleries at dA; the things in this gallery are meant to be used, so I'm always on the lookout for things that will be useful to artists. Beyond that, this answer varies depending on the type of resources you're asking about.
Stock photos, for example, should be at least 600 wide and 600 pixels high. They shouldn't be too grainy or too dark for an artist to extract into their art.
Visual tutorials should be written with a typeface that isn't too difficult to read. The steps should be relatively easy to follow, and the end result should look reasonably well-executed.
I could go on for a long time about all the things that make different kinds of resources useful because there's are a lot of variety in this gallery, but these are the two types of resources that are suggested to me the most.
Are there any deviantART features that you have never used?
Hmmm... I try to check out what's available, though I really haven't had any use for dA's portfolios. I did try it out, but I never got very far. I don't use Discover. If there are features I haven't tried, it's only because I don't know of them.
How old were you when you first became interested in art?
Though I don't consider myself an artist, art has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. I've always been involved with music, dance, literature, theater, or visual arts in one way or another. I don't recall a time before I was into art. The artistic subjects were always my favorite classes in school.
Which artists (off and on dA) inspire you?
In visual art, I really dig Brian Froud, Luis Royo, HR Giger, MC Escher, Wendi Pini, Trina Schart Hyman's Peter Pan illustrations...
At dA... There are really some amazing resource providers at dA that I don't think I could ever compare myself to like ^Elandria's work in her stock gallery. She makes these amazing dresses as costumes for her stock photos... And `mjranum-stock always rocks my socks.
I'm also a big fan of *heise, `Saimain, *Goldenwolf, and *MisticUnicorn... There are others, of course, but these are some examples of the kinds of art I like.
What are your pet peeves on dA?
The new limit on search results is frustrating to me. 1,000 results just aren't enough in my opinion, and I don't mind if that means waiting a little longer for the results.
I'm also a little peeved that gallery descriptions are no longer available on each gallery page. I wish these were more visible during the upload process at dA too.
And I want a standard dA clock with dA time, so it would be easier to state when contests will end and meetings will happen. And there should be a search function in our notes and messages... and, and, and...
But I love dA for all that it is. I wouldn't want to change TOO much.
Recently, there has been a lot of controversy about buying pageviews with points. What is your view on this?
I went to school for marketing, so I don't mind seeing people use little tactics to market themselves at dA. If it works, and no one is getting ripped off, go for it! As long as it's honest.
However, these things can get out of hand if promises of points aren't kept. And it's against the rules to host any type of "lottery" at dA. But if it's legit and within dA's policies, I don't see the harm in offering one's visitors a few points now and then to keep traffic flowing.
What type of music are you into?
It would be easier to tell you what I don't like. I studied voice for a few years, and, though I'm not an expert, it is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me to listen to any music where the vocalist is damaging their voice. Country music is the worst for this. A throaty or nasal twang is one of the worst things you can do with that instrument imo. It's disturbing to hear. I can appreciate just about any other music.
What kind of movies are you into?
Fantasy, of course! I like science fiction too. I love a lot of animated movies, which sometimes includes some anime. I'm a fan of the original Star Wars saga, but I wish the older Star Wars movies had the same quality of action (fight scenes especially) as the newer ones. I like to really watch movies with special effects to try to see how the crew made movie magic. I love watching DVD extras and commentaries after seeing a good movie.
Is there anything else you would like to add?
At the moment, there's a little avatar contest here: [link]
I'd like to say a huge thanks to `FantasyStock for taking the time to be interviewed.

Well, I am an Australian deviant who's been around the site for a few years now, but this is my first active account, you know posting art and spreading rainbows and such, before I was just an art appreciator really

I've been a fan of ^FantasyStock for like a year, since I joined DA! And I'm glad you interviewed him
